Personal Space

The following project was about the subject for personal space which in a lot of cases is very hard to define. It can been seen as the boundaries of people or the space between them, relationships and in someways the phycology of a person. It can be looked at in any sense a person chooses to, some people with objects and others with people.

I thought about the concept of objects being personal and decided to try it out for myself. I wear patchouli and use it in oil burners around my cottage quite a lot so I thought this little bottle would be a good thing to try. I placed it on my floor in my old flat as a lot of light came  during the day and it gave a good backdrop. It was later in the afternoon so the shadows were harsher and the highlights inside the bottle are more defined. I think the shot came out well considering I wasn't looking into the camera lenses as I don't with many of my shots so I think my judgement was good as the elements I wanted to be in focus are.

I cropped in to see the details of the inside of the bottle and I like the effect the light creates. I considered doing more shoots with the same way but didn't have time so I will do this in the future. You can see the tiny bubbles in the oil and the imperfections in the glass which I really like, also the bottle is slightly out of focus so the sense of depth is slightly different to if it was sharper which I find hard to achieve with some shots but I think this effect works with this picture.

Me and my partner did a photo shoot in the spare room at my old flat and we experimented with portraits and lighting. I like this photo of him as he is quite natural and is dressed the way he usually does. I added the splat texture in Photoshop later to add something interesting to the image. It almost embraces him and covers him at some points so it lets your eye follow it.
My partner plays with fire toys a lot of the time as he enjoys pyrotechnics. What he is spinning is poi which is basically a string with a ball attached to it which either lights up or is able to be set on fire. You can practice using long socks with the ends filled with rice or grain tided at the end so the rice stays at the end and weights it down so it spins evenly. I took the photo at a low shutter speed so there is a slightly blurred motion effect and I added the fire effect in Photoshop over the top of the image so that it had a more interesting texture.
I then focused on people and being honest what is more personal than yourself? I took this self portrait using a windows reflection at college. the scratches and marks on the photo are on the window and this makes it look a little abstract and obscure. I covered my face to add a sense of mystery and no identity though my clothes and the camera say a lot about my personality. I used to wear that hat all the time and the leather jacket and many of my clothes stand out though I don't like to stand out. I like to be different and my own person so I show that through my own individual style.
